ON THE LASH
Typical girls! This image focuses on the need for validation. Exploring the pressures that we conform to, trying to achieve this idealistic version of ‘perfect’ that is portrayed in the media. The use of acid bright orange skin tones, exaggerating the addiction to fake tan.
IBIZA LET ME HEAR YAAAAA!
Packed with detail, this image depicts different cliques of people in a raw and honest way. Stereotypes being a massive part of my work, bringing people to question the behaviours through the use of humour and language.
#nofilter
As a teenage girl growing up online, I felt the pressure of how I came across. In recent years Instagram and Snapchat filters have started to change your face. Making the face smaller, the exaggeration of cheek bones, eyes made to look bigger and enhancing lips massively. Creating a negative impression on people’s natural features, thinking this is the ideal. This unnatural aesthetic means fillers and cosmetic surgery are becoming a norm - changing yourself based on others perception of beauty and an internet filter. This painting is challenging that perception.
Festival blues :(
Festival culture is different to your average night out, this scene is tackling topics like drugs, alcohol, sex and physical appearance.
I'VE GOT A TEXT!
This scene plays around with the idealism and obsession we currently have with ‘influencers.’ Showing Love Island ‘stars’ in 20 years time, their faces not changed due to the filler addiction. The boys are cheeky as ever, clinging on to the fame and attention.
The white cube
This panoramic illustration looks at the anxieties and stereotypes involved with ‘The White Cube’ gallery space. From the evil eyed gallery assistant to the pretentious artist. The gallery would recognise the irony and the characters depicted.
420 BLAZE IT
Exploring ‘Skater Boy’ culture through the use of language and visual aesthetics.
Isobel Adams
My work comments on my generation's obsession with the Internet through digital illustrations, social commentary and documentation.
I have found my own satirical voice questioning the behaviour and feelings I face on a daily basis, analysing its impact through irony, humour and sarcasm. Through not knowing life without the Internet, a reoccurring theme in my work is ‘Generation Instagram’. My work at times comes across as narcissistic. Is this a representation of my generation? The claim that my generation is narcissistic is a view inflicted on us by those not a part of it. Showing the truths behind this behaviour, the mental health issues surrounding a life online; insecurities, the need for validation and comparing ourselves to others. Showing the best bits of everyone’s life, no real personality or emotion, just a ‘perfect’ life.
Through the process of my drawing I have found my own unique style. The original marks, unproportionate figures and the use of colour. The vibrancy and flatness of colour surrounded by graphic lines often concealing a much darker narrative.
Next in my career I want to continue to develop my practice and aim to become a self employed artist. I am excited to see what the future has in store for me.
