Locomotive print used on a sports top
This is one of my main prints in the collection. I used sublimation print, using the heat press, onto the back of a sports top which is mesh.
Axle print on gold leotard
This placement print was printed using black pigment paste onto one of my old leotards. I was able to repurpose the leotard by printing a new design onto it.
Power print used on the back of a jacket
This main print design was pigment printed onto iridescent fabric. I used this fabric as when flash lights on cars are used at night the person wearing it would be visible to the driver. The word power represents not only what is needed to fuel engines and industrial processes, but it is also what athletes need in order to train and to perform at their peak, especially during an Olympic year.
Decapod print design
This print design is an engineered design created from a drawing and edited digitally. I have used the Art Deco style as inspiration for mirroring the print as well as the structured lines of abstracted mechanical parts.
Paolozzi print and component print
Both these main print designs have been inspired by Eduardo Paolozzi. Creating detailed drawings and editing them digitally has meant I was able to create seamless prints. Using black and white instead of colour provides contrast and interest within the collection.
Linkage print close-up of a fabric sample
This co-ordinate print has been printed onto a top using sublimation printing on to a breathable fabric. This image is a close up area of what the print is like on the fabric.
Lever print and rivet print
Both these co-ordinate prints have been created digitally using 3 colours from my palette. Lever print is a large scale print where as Rivet print is a smaller scale.
Line up and range plan of my Industrial Games collection
Here I have created a line up all my prints on people as well as creating a range plan, which is something you would see of the collection in industry.
Phoebe Gibson
Phoebe is an active gymnast and sportsperson competing over the past 16 years, who set out to design a collection that she would be proud to wear, that played on the energy and power her sports require, marrying it with the industrial heritage of Loughborough and the industrial movement.
The work focuses on wearable print design that can stretch from the professional sports person to the everyday. At the heart of ‘Industrial Games’ is the fact sportswear has become a core component of every wardrobe. Phoebe grew up with it, training every day and being inspired by the clothing professional athletes wear. Over time sportswear has gone from sports shops to designer collections and print design has become an essential part of elevating the clothing allowing individual personality. Phoebe has created the ‘Industrial Games’ collection in an Olympic year to give athletes kit that plays on the burst of energy and power that fuels their activity, with a focus on her own sport gymnastics. Working digitally enable designs to be created that were fit for the purpose of sport. Successfully learning the specific requirements of technical sporting fabrics, designs have been created that are breathable, that stretch, have appropriate scale, provide support and appeal. Phoebe aspires to work within the sporting industry designing textiles that are functional, individual and aesthetically pleasing expanding on her skill set learnt from Loughborough University and placement year.

Seeing underwear I had designed for sale in Bjorn Borg shops brought together each part of the process and an appreciation of how important the various roles were. The Chief Designer chose my print design for the Pride collection together with further designs for monthly prints and the Olympic collection. I was delighted he wrote “We are overall very happy with having Phoebe here…. BJORN BORG is a company moving at a fast pace and Phoebe had no problems coming onboard in the middle of it all.” These designs, for boxer shorts were on materials similar to sportswear.
During my time as Kit Secretary for Loughborough Gymnastics I was delighted to redesign both men’s and women’s leotards working to the brief set out by Kukri and the university.
Experience
Four placements in London, Stockholm and Sydney gave me a fantastic opportunity to assimilate knowledge and understand the role of textile design. At Gibson Girl, a small niche sportswear brand I was able to get a complete overview of a boutique company. From design, through photo shoots to admin and dispatch. At Bjorn Borg, as a graphic design intern and based in Stockholm, I learnt in depth skills of Photoshop, and Illustrator and value of teamwork with satisfaction of seeing print from design to commercial implementation. At Karolina York in Sydney, a print design studio, days were spent conceptualising collections drawing and illustrating. At JRC, a London based print studio, I took a brief and created digital drawings to take to print.
