Aspiring towards inclusive design and playful prints I have created Play, an accessible play space for all. I have worked with children with additional needs for the last 6 years and this inspires me to embed sensory integration into my pieces, alongside educational elements focusing on environmental impacts through textiles.

My project focuses on integrating play stimulation to children of all abilities, in a safe, comfortable and educationally inspired space. Focusing on the natural forms, shapes and textures found amongst the British coastal landscapes, I was able to interpret personal inspiration into my designs to create a play space that was both aesthetically pleasing and educational to its user. After extensive research and personal interest into the sustainability of the textiles industry, alongside the global impact we have on our coastlines, I aimed throughout to represent both these environmental factors equally. Through the use of second-hand materials and less wasteful methods of print making/design, I have formed a collection of interior pieces that sit amongst one another in a playful and peaceful space. By exploring mark making and loose designs I have developed my initial photographs and drawings into an abstract array of repeats and patterns that interlink through method and colour. Additionally, to enhance the play aspect, I made the creative choice to add multi textural elements to a selection of my pieces to accentuate the practice of play through touch. My methods of texture include embroidery, woven elements and textural material choices, all adding subtle yet effective new dimensions to the pastel toned designs within my work. By providing sensory integration through this play space and the colours and pattern designs selected, I have enabled children to play without sensory overstimulation, creating a more gentle, calming and relaxing play space.
