Defended coastline: Weathered boat
The textures created on coastal man-made objects convey a powerful sense of colour, detail and interest. This project encapsulates these textures.
Defended coastline: Hand painted Ikat paper weave
Paper weave demonstrating the idea of a double cloth merino wool and SeaCell Ikat warp.
Defended coastline: Mixed medium textural painting
Paintings for Defended Coastline were created intuitively, letting go of an expectation and attachment to a predetermined result; this echoes the natural formation of the coastline. This design demonstrates experimentation with the application of paint and a mixture of materials.
Sarah Manning
Sarah is an enthusiastic, self-motivated, and vibrant woven textiles creator with a desire to embed sustainability in woven textiles design. Her Defended Coastline collection is inspired by her personal passion of being in, on and by the coast.
Sarah’s designs have a textural richness, carefully considered colour palettes, and demonstrate environmentally conscious design decisions. Her Defended Coastline collection aims to bring the colours and textures on man-made surfaces along the coastline into people’s homes through the production of environmentally sustainable woven fabrics used to produce ‘self-care bundles’ for the affordable luxury market.
Sarah enjoyed exploring multiple roles within the textiles industry during her placement year; she developed a wide range of skills and knowledge, which she values, and has applied to produce her Defended Coastline collection. Sarah intends to continue to pursue her passion for colour, sustainability, and texture as a textiles designer.
