Scarlet Alford

My work is driven by powerful narratives of the everyday.

My practice focuses on the spontaneity of Automatism through my unconscious thoughts, by strengthening key methods of blindfold bodily painting and poetic needlework. I experiment with interlinks to Abstract Art by using my skills of oil and acrylic mediums, while expressing gestural marks on the canvas. It's especially prominent to my practice that I use the colour orange, as it features across my paintings. The use of orange is a connection to my energetic personality, the joy to life, and thus expresses my future self. I aim to challenge my art practice of becoming a freelance artist whilst perusing my life passion to be an inspirational teacher.

Dissertation

An investigation into how western artists use colour in paintings to convey feeling with reference to Mark Rothko and Bridget Riley: a practice-led study

Final year project

The automatic paintings
